DHARMA WHEEL: A MEDITATION IN ANIMAL FORM

Christine Adele Moore
”Dharma Wheel” 2025
Acrylic on canvas 72” x 72”

In this painting, I set out to reinterpret the Dharma Wheel - not as an abstract diagram of spiritual principles, but as a living, breathing mandala woven from the animal world. Each creature depicted represents one of the eight spokes of the Noble Eightfold Path, embodying values such as right action, right view, and right intention through their natural behaviors and symbolic traits.

The composition is structured around a central eye/floral mandala motif, from which golden filigree extends outward like growing vines, connecting and protecting each of the animal symbols.

An owl for wisdom and right view gazes directly from the top, while a tiger anchors the base with intense presence and concentration. The deer, songbird, elephant and others bring unique qualities of compassion, discipline, and mindfulness to the visual narrative.

Within each animal, one word is written/hidden to denote which of the Eightfold Paths is represented.

To bring depth and subtle motion to the work, I build the surface using multiple layers of acrylic paint and translucent acrylic mediums. These transparent veils allow me to create luminous color transitions and soft edges that evoke the slow unfolding of awareness. I also incorporated reflective elements into the layers - small accents that catch and shift light as the viewer moves around the piece.

The kinetic quality is important to me. I want the painting to feel alive from within, like the teachings themselves.

This work is both devotional and interpretive - a meditation in color, form, and symbolic resonance. It is not meant only to be seen, but to contemplated.

The Buddha’s Eightfold Path

“The Noble Eightfold Path is a key part of the Four Noble Truths, outlining the way to end suffering. The path emphasizes ethical living, meditation and developing wisdom. Following the path generates good karma, leading to positive consequences and preventing suffering. The eight interconnected elements of the path are Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration. The path encourages us to cultivate skillful behaviors, overcome hindrances, and achieve a state of peaceful awareness through meditation.”
